Plywood and Sheet Goods Sizes: A Practical Reference
Standard plywood, MDF, and melamine sheet sizes in both imperial and metric, and how to pick the right stock size before you optimize a cut list.
Before you can optimize a cut list, you need to know what stock sizes are actually available to buy — and that varies more than most people expect, especially once you compare North American, European, and Australian suppliers.
The default: 4×8 ft (1220 × 2440mm)
The vast majority of plywood, MDF, OSB, and particleboard sold in North America comes in 4 × 8 foot sheets, which is 1219 × 2438mm in metric (commonly rounded to 1220 × 2440mm). This size is standard enough that most cutlist tools — including ours — use it as the default preset.
Common thicknesses for 4×8 sheets:
- Plywood: 1/4“, 1/2“, 3/4“ (6mm, 12mm, 18mm nominal)
- MDF: 1/2“, 3/4“, 1“ (12mm, 18mm, 25mm)
- OSB: 7/16“, 5/8“, 3/4“
Half sheets and quarter sheets
Many suppliers pre-cut 4×8 sheets into 4×4 ft (1220 × 1220mm) half sheets or smaller, usually at a per-sheet premium. If your parts are small enough to fit efficiently on a half sheet, buying half sheets can reduce waste and make material easier to transport — but the per-square-foot cost is almost always higher. Run both scenarios through a cut optimizer before deciding; sometimes the “wasteful-looking” full sheet is still cheaper once you account for the half-sheet premium.
Metric / continental sizes
Outside North America, particularly in continental Europe, melamine-faced particleboard and MDF are frequently sold in larger sheets:
- 2440 × 1220mm — matches the imperial 4×8 equivalent
- 2750 × 1830mm — a larger continental standard, common for melamine and particleboard
- 3050 × 1220mm — an extended-length option some suppliers carry for long panels without a seam
Larger sheets can dramatically reduce waste for long parts (think wardrobe sides or long shelving), but they’re heavier, harder to handle solo, and not every supplier stocks them — confirm availability before designing a project around a less common size.
How stock size choice affects waste
This is the part most people skip: the “best” stock size depends entirely on your specific part list, not on some universal rule. A few examples:
- A run of small drawer parts might nest almost perfectly on standard 4×8 sheets with under 5% waste.
- The same shop cutting long bookcase sides (say, 1900mm tall) might waste 15–20% of every 2440mm sheet because the extra ~540mm per sheet can’t fit another full-height part.
- Switching that second project to a 2750 × 1830mm continental sheet, laid the other direction, could drop waste back under 8%.
You can’t reliably eyeball this. It’s exactly the kind of arithmetic a packing algorithm is good at and humans are bad at.
Using presets in the optimizer

If your supplier carries a size that isn’t in the preset list, you can enter any custom width and height directly — there’s no restriction to “supported” sizes.
